What is the history of cheer camp?
As a former cheerleader of Southern Methodist University, Laurence Herkimer developed the philosophy that cheerleaders could perform better if they trained outside of the school year. In 1948, Herkimer created the National Cheerleading Association (NCA) and founded the first cheer training camp in the summer of 1949. Fifty-two college cheerleaders attended that first camp and within a few years, whole squads followed suit. This led to the highly competitive and intense training many cheerleaders invest in today.
